10 Questions to ask your Wedding Celebrant

Wondering what questions to ask your Wedding Celebrant?

With Brisbane City Celebrants

We have put together a selection of 10 Questions you absolutely MUST ask your potential Wedding Celebrant

We did quite the happy dance when Polka Dot Bride published our article!

We are so passionate about being professional and raising the bar in the industry, so when we realised all the ‘questions to ask your Celebrant’ lists that are floating around the net only have the very basics like ‘how much’ and ‘are you available’ we knew these aren’t going to assist couples in securing quality suppliers and mitigating potential risks of things going wrong.

So we put together our own list of 10 MUST ASK CELEBRANT QUESTIONS. We are chuffed to bits that Polka Dot Bride loved this enough to publish it.

You can read our Polka Dot Bride article here. Please note this article was published in 2014 so some information may have changed since then.

We hope our article will help equip couples with what questions to ask their Wedding Celebrant and help them ensure they find the right Celebrant for them.

A special thank to Andrew Sun Photography who allowed us the use of his images from Louise and Owens breathtaking garden wedding ceremony to accompany our article.

We previously featured on Polka Dot Bride when Cara was the Celebrant for a ‘surprise vow renewal’ ceremony, which was a collaboration between some amazing and generous wedding vendors to give a former bride and groom the wedding photos they never received from their actual wedding.

All a complete surprise to the bride and groom who thought they we’re just having a little photo shoot. Read more about this feature here.

The QLD WEOA awards night

With Brisbane City Celebrants

We are so excited to share our experience of the amazing QLD WEOA awards night.

Jamie and I were so thrilled to be recognised as finalists for the QLD Celebrant award for excellence, especially considering the high standard and level of professionalism required to be recognised as one of WEOA’s elite wedding suppliers.

WEOA are incredibly passionate about recognising the elite of the wedding industry, the best of the best. More on WEOA, their criteria and how we became finalists in our previous blog post here.

So back to the awards night. The Marriott Hotel in Surfers Paradise was the venue for this event to take place. We booked a room in the hotel so we could ready and make the most of the night, and the Moet!

From the moment we arrived we were so impressed with this hotel, we received the warmest welcome and a glass of champagne and chocolates on check in which was the perfect way to commence the celebrations of the evening ahead.

Shortly after check in my hair and make up angels arrived. While I am familiar with the many amazing Brisbane hair and make up artists as I see their gorgeous work up close every weekend on my beautiful brides, I was at a loss of who from the Gold Coast I should book, until I remembered a recent ‘Real Wedding’ testimonial from one of Jamie’s brides Louise, absolutely raving about her hair and make up artist Closeup Hair and Make Up.

I was so excited that they were kind enough to agree to give up their Sunday afternoon to get me red carpet ready.

Mel created beautiful big curls in my hair which I adored, once she had finished she popped a hair net on to keep my hair out of my face while Amelda did my make up. Meanwhile, Jamie who had been getting ready, stepped out of the bathroom looking dashing in his black tie attire, if you ask me he was definitely channeling James Bond!

Looking like a nanna with the hair net still in place I spun around and said ‘da da, all finished what do you think?’ he immediately showed about 10 drastically different facial expressions in about 2 seconds flat, from confused to awkward and a vast array of other various expressions, then the 3 of us burst in to laughter and he figured the hair net wasn’t really staying on, which he was pretty relieved about, I think he was also pretty relieved he didn’t have to find a way of telling me I looked ridiculous without offending me or the hair dresser with his brutal honesty.

While Jamie began on the champagne, Amelda began on my make up.  She told me how she teaches make up artistry at TAFE which was evident in her level of professionalism. I really enjoyed chatting and getting to know Amelda as she airbrushed my face, painted my eye lids and applied a set of luscious lashes.

We quickly realised we had a lot in common, including a passion for animal welfare, an appreciation for Ricky Gervais humour and an obsession with our super cute Maltese X Silky Terrier pups!

Wedding Shoes

It seemed fitting to wear my sparkly wedding shoes for the awards night, for the first time since our wedding 6 years ago. Image: Maz Photography

Once the girls had worked their magic I added the most beautiful sparkling head piece that was very kindly gifted to me by Begitta who was a finalist for ‘Bridal Gown Couture Designer of the year’ however she was unable to attend so she gave me the huge honour of representing her beautiful brand for the evening.

I proceeded to receive so many compliments on this gorgeous head piece throughout the night.

Once we had finished getting ready we took a walk around the grounds before heading to the Moet bar for pre drinks.

We made our way down the red carpet where we paused for a photo at the media wall. Once the photographer finished taking his photo and moved the camera away from his face, Jamie and the photographer Aaron from Milque immediately recognised each other from a Mt Cooth-tha botanical gardens wedding that they worked together at just 2 weeks earlier.

Aaron is super friendly and all round nice guy and Jamie had really enjoyed working alongside him. Milque Photography were also a finalists and went on to win the award for photographer of the year, they are all such lovely people and we were so happy for them.

We proceeded to mingle at the pre-drinks where we met the founders of Candy Addictions. It’s always interesting hearing what motivated other businesses to come to fruition. We also met the lovely Sarah from Studio Cakes who was accompanied by an awesome support crew who we later ended up dancing much of the night away with! Sarah was also the cake sponsor for the event so we got to try her delicious cake which was amazing!

We made our way to our table to find we were seated with the lovely Pauline from Limoso Limousines, Jordanna Regan a couture designer and her sister, the lovely girls from Sugar and Spice and also the Owner of Silk Hair and Make up. It was amazing to see we actually had connections to all of them from previous weddings, shoots or other industry professionals.

The evening kicked off with a presentation from Jessica the founder of WEOA who shared her vision of how the system will evolve over the coming year.

Then before we knew it we were straight in to the awards, first off was the award for ‘Bridal Gown Couture Designer of the Year’ they read the shortlist and then the next thing we heard was “and the winner is…….. pause………. Begitta!” the whole room filled with applause and cheers and Jamie elbowed me to head up to the stage to accept the award on Begittas behalf.

I was handed the award plaque and directed to the lectern to say some words, I introduced myself as Ciara from Brisbane City Celebrants and explained that I was accepting the award on behalf of Begitta as regrettably she was unable to be here. Then I looked up expecting to make eye contact with all the friendly smiling faces but instead I was faced with the brightest of lights staring back at me, it was blinding and totally caught me off guard. Momentarily feeling like a deer in the headlights, I quickly wrapped up, congratulated Begitta and the room filled with applause for the very passionate and deserving winner while I swiftly made my way away from the limelight, award plaque in hand.

Several more awards were presented then a short recess took place while entrees were served, after which the Celebrant award was announced. We were so happy when Bill Scurry from the Sunshine Coast won for QLD and not just because it meant I didn’t have to make my way up to the stage again (Phew!). Bill is a very well respected Celebrant in his local area, as we are in ours so we believe the judges did a wonderful job.

After several more awards there was another recess before mains were served, a seriously awesome band called ‘Sex and Chocolate’ were warming up the dance floor so it was great having our hotel room at hand so I could quickly switch in to my dancing shoes to hit the dance floor!

When we returned we met Bill and had a great chat with him, he really is a lovely chap. The moment the awards concluded the band went off! It’s not often you see more people on the dance floor than in their seats but no one could help themselves, they really were that awesome!

We spent the rest of the evening, mingling, dancing, laughing and having so much fun!

We jumped ‘In the booth‘ for some photo booth fun, then before we knew it the night drew to a close, well they do say time flies when you’re having fun. It was such a fun night and we had a blast!

Big thanks to Jess from WEOA for all your hard work in putting an amazing night together, to the band ‘Sex and Chocolate‘ for the rocking night, and to all the lovely professional wedding vendors we had the pleasure of catching up with or meeting for the first time.

Questions to ask potential Wedding Celebrants

With Celebrants Cara and Jamie of Brisbane City Celebrants

Celebrants Cara and Jamie have compiled the following questions to ask potential Wedding Celebrants to assist couples with the process of choosing the right Celebrant for them.

Questions to ask your potential Wedding Celebrant

How do I choose a Celebrant?

Most of our couples tell us they look at several Celebrants websites, view photos, videos and testimonials to get a feel of which Celebrant will suit them best before picking their favourite one (or making a shortlist) then checking availability.

A great sign that you have found the right Celebrant is that feeling that they really ‘get’ you, are on the same page, listen to you, have the right ideas and suggestions for the kind of ceremony you have in mind. A great Celebrant should also present highly professionally with a wealth of knowledge, after all you are trusting them to meet the legal requirements of your ceremony, and to ensure the ceremony runs smoothly on the day.

Our advice with choosing the right Celebrant for you is to go with your gut feeling, if things don’t feel quite right or they aren’t prepared to work with your ideas they may be on a different page to you.

How long does a wedding ceremony usually take?

The length of time a wedding ceremony takes varies from couple to couple, some couples choose to include readings and rituals, others like their ceremony to be short and sweet. These all factor in to the length of the ceremony.

Brisbane City Celebrants specialise in simple and meaningful and fun and light-hearted weddings so we generally allow 15-20 minutes from the beginning to end of the ceremony.

Will I get to proof my ceremony wording before the wedding day?

We believe it’s really important for couples to see and proof their ceremony before the special day for a number of reasons:

–       You know exactly what to expect on the day and how the ceremony flows

–       You can make any changes you wish so the ceremony really reflects you as a couple and is perfect for you

–       There will be no unwanted ‘surprises’ on the day

–       You can confirm any pre or post wedding announcements that you need the Celebrant to make

–       Last but certainly not least you can be assured that the Celebrant hasn’t got you mixed up with another couple and gets your ceremony and names correct!

Brisbane City Celebrants #raisingthebar

Brisbane City Celebrants #raisingthebar

The Brisbane City Celebrants team always work with our couples in creating a ceremony specifically for each couple. Our couples are ALWAYS given plenty of opportunity to make changes or add to their ceremony before confirming the final version for their special day. Even if your Celebrant doesn’t offer you the option to see your ceremony, please please please insist on reviewing/ proofing this before your big day, as it will mitigate the potential risk of problems or errors and knowing exactly what to expect will really help to put you at ease for your big day.

Also try and avoid having your Celebrant send you through your ceremony to review, for the first time just days before your wedding. All experienced wedding vendors are well aware that on the days leading up to your wedding, couples are generally flat out, running round trying to get all the final details finalised, getting nails done, confirming final details with other vendors, catching up with interstate and overseas guests pre wedding etc. and barely have time to really absorb what you have been provided, let alone have time to plan, write and include your own segments, such as sharing the story of how you met. So the earlier in to the planning phase you can work on and finalise your ceremony the better.

All our couples receive their personalised first draft of their ceremony within days of securing their date with us, allowing them plenty of time of discuss ideas and suggestions and decide what works best for them. Most of our couples confirm their final ceremony with us months before their wedding date so it doesn’t spring up on their wedding ‘to do’ list at the last minute!

Do we have to write our own vows?

It is not compulsory to write your own vows, when we have our initial meeting with couples we discuss the option of writing your own vows, we provide our ‘vow writing worksheet’ to assist couples with writing their own vows, and also provide some sample vows they can choose from if they wish to do so.

Some couples prefer to keep their ceremony simple and repeat the minimum legal wording only, this is entirely up to you.

Brisbane City Celebrants #raisingthebar

Brisbane City Celebrants #raisingthebar

Do I have to memorise my vows?

You don’t need to memorise your vows, depending on the length of the vows we recommend to our couples to either repeat them after us or read them from a printed sheet, on the very odd occasion some couples have opted to memorise them or even make them up on the spot, very impressive but only if you’re really game!

Should our vows to each other be the same?

Civil wedding ceremonies give you so much flexibility, there is no ‘should’ in this case. Here are a few options for your wedding vows:

– Write/ chose your wedding vows together, then repeat the same vows to each other on the day;

– Write your own vows separately and surprise each other with your ‘written from the heart’ words on the day;

– Write each others vows on behalf of each other and surprise each other with these to repeat after the Celebrant on the day (this is generally for a humorous take on wedding vows)

e.g. “I promise to always put the toilet seat down, let you change the channel to watch Real Housewives whenever the AFL is on, make you breakfast in bed when you’re hung over and give you foot rubs when you’ve had a long day at work.”

What happens if we don’t want to have a bridal party?

An increasing number of couples are opting for either a large bridal party, or no bridal party at all, it is your wedding and the choice is all yours! Guests at weddings of couples that choose to have no bridal party often comment on how the ceremony really feels to be about the couple and their love for each other.

As the best man is often a ring bearer a simple adjustment can easily be made where the groom has the rings, or a page boy of family member can come forward with these.

Brisbane City Celebrants #raisingthebar

Brisbane City Celebrants #raisingthebar

Who can witness our legal documents?

Couples often select the best man and Maid of Honor to be their witnesses, however anyone of sound mind (e.g. not drunk!) and over the age of 18 can be your witness, so you can simply take your pick from your guests.

I live in Brisbane and am planning a destination wedding on Hamilton island, should I engage a Brisbane Celebrant or a local Celebrant?

The choice is yours! most couples may try and source a local Celebrant, however if you are not able to get to the venue much before the wedding the benefit of choosing a Brisbane based Celebrant is that you can have your initial meetings locally while in Brisbane. The Brisbane City Celebrants team love to travel and we also love destination weddings so much so that we may well waive the travel fee, ask us, you never know!

Brisbane City Celebrants #raisingthebar

Brisbane City Celebrants #raisingthebar

With over 6 years of experience as highly regarded and sought after Brisbane Celebrants, Ciara and Jamie are passionate about being the best we can be while educating and mentoring to raise the bar within the Celebrant industry.

Is there a fee involved if we need to change the date or time for any reason?

This is a good question to ask your Celebrant. Brisbane City Celebrants do not charge a fee if you need to change your date or time of your ceremony. We do request to be notified as soon as possible so we can confirm availability.

Is there a late fee involved if the bride or groom is late for the wedding? how late can the bride be?

This is another good question to ask your Celebrant. Brisbane City Celebrants do not charge a late fee, however we do ask to be kept informed as best as possible on the day if the bride is running late so this can be communicated to the waiting guests. Your Celebrant will usually outline within their service agreement details of how long they believe is acceptable to wait for the bride and or groom to arrive.

In the event that you have an accident or become ill and are unable to perform the wedding, what arrangements do you have in place?

Thankfully being a team of 2 Celebrants if one of us became ill, the other is usually available to stand in and present the ceremony with the same professionalism, passion and enthusiasm at very short notice. In the unlikely event that we were both suddenly unavailable to perform the ceremony, we have a network of Celebrants and with your permission we would transfer the legal documentation to, to perform the ceremony.

That said, being young, fit and healthy Celebrants the likelihood of one or both of us taking ill is very slim.

Brisbane City Celebrants #raisingthebar

Brisbane City Celebrants #raisingthebar

Do we both have to exchange rings?

Although exchanging wedding rings is a traditional part of a wedding ceremony, there is no legal obligation to do so. In our experience most couples still chose to exchange rings, however occasionally the groom prefers not to have a ring (for example it may not be practical if he isn’t permitted to wear jewellery for health and safety reasons at work). It’s also not unheard of for the bride to have 2 or even 3 rings, perhaps one to represent each child she has given her husband.

Do I have to be ‘given away’ by my father?

The giving away is also a traditional element of the ceremony that is not a legal requirement, so in response to the question, no the bride does not have to be given away by her father. When it comes to the arrival of the bride and the giving away there are many options, including the following:

– Father gives the bride away (traditional)

– Father and Mother give bride away (modern twist on the traditional giving away)

– Couples child or children give the bride away

– Bridesmaids give the bride away

– No giving away (the bride walks up the aisle to her groom by herself)

– Brides father and mother give the bride away, and the grooms father and mother give the groom away

– The bride and groom arrive together and walk up the aisle together! (One of our favourites!)

As a Brisbane Celebrant can you perform my wedding in NSW or other States?

As Registered Authorised Marriage Celebrants appointed by the Attorney General, providing the legal requirements are met, Brisbane City Celebrants can perform marriage ceremonies anywhere in Australia. We love an excuse for a weekend away in beautiful places like Byron Bay or Kingscliff so do check with us if we’re available to perform your wedding at your chosen location.

Are there any limits to where I can get married?

Brisbane is the perfect climate for outdoor weddings so why not get creative and wed at your special place, where you met, spent your first date or like a couple of ours who married at the same spot where they shared their first kiss… in a departure terminal at Brisbane Airport! Which goes to show that (nearly) anywhere is possible.

As professional Celebrants we will guide you through the legal requirements to ensure these are met, one of these requirements is that myself and your 2 witnesses can hear you as you repeat the mandatory legal wording, so please take that in to account if you are considering an unusual ceremony location.

What legal forms do I need to complete to get married in Australia?

1. Notice of Intended Marriage form (NOIM). This must be signed and witnessed by your Celebrant no later than one month before the date of your wedding. You can view this form here.
The form can either be completed electronically or by hand with black ink in BLOCK caps.

Along with this form, the following ID must be viewed by your Celebrant:

If you were born in Australia – your Celebrant is required to sight either your original birth certificate or Australian passport, and if applicable, divorce or death papers if you have been previously married.

If you were not born in Australia – Your Celebrant will need to sight your passport, and if applicable, divorce or death papers if you have been previously married.

Your Celebrant also needs to sight photo ID (e.g. Driver’s License) for identification purposes.
2. Declarations: You will both need to complete and sign declarations prior to your wedding to confirm that there is no legal impediment to you marrying each other.

3. Marriage certificate/ extract application (Optional).

This form is your request for your ‘registry issued marriage certificate’ which is the legal document required by most organisations to verify your marriage, and to allow the bride to change her surname to the grooms surname once you are legally married.

A good professional Celebrant, like Brisbane City Celebrants 😉 will also give you the option to complete this form and will submit this with your marriage documents on your behalf to Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM).

If your Celebrant submits this for you, it saves you the headache of having to get all the required accompanying ID together and JP witnessed and sent off yourself. Instead you can return from your honeymoon to find your official marriage certificate in your letter box allowing you to take your new husbands last name (if you wish!).

Best friends tied the knot in this unique Gabba wedding

With Celebrant Jamie Eastgate of Brisbane City Celebrants

Shannon and Matt, best friends and soul mates were married at The Gabba in a ceremony that was full of both love and laughter.

Guests were provided a ‘Wedding I Spy Guide’ on arrival which included a #weddinghashtag so everyone present could share their photos of this social media friendly wedding.

The ceremony was originally planned to take place on the pitch, however following earlier rain the pitch was too soggy so the QLD Cricketers Club made an excellent wet weather option.

Anyone who has had the pleasure of going to Glengariff Historic Estate will tell you this is a venue with wow factor. Needless to say, this bride and groom loved the incredible backdrop and sweeping views so much they booked their wedding here.

Being approximately a 45 minute drive from Brisbane City and with most of their guests traveling from a far, many from overseas, they organised a full size bus to transport their guests to and from the venue for convenience.

While planning the transport they came up with a great idea, ‘as we are providing transport, why not surprise the guests with the venue so they get the full wow factor when they arrive here too’, so that’s what they did.

I loved watching the guests ‘wow’ as they were greeted with this view of the breath taking ‘surprise’ wedding venue, at the lovely Glengariff Historic Estate in Samford.

The couple enjoyed a happy and heartfelt ceremony with the grooms sister who traveled all the way from the UK to be here, given the honour of ‘Best Woman’ much to her delight.

Wishing the newly weds every happiness for your future together and thank you for choosing me as your Glengariff Historic Estate wedding Celebrant.

A Gatsby styled wedding in Roma Street Parklands

With Celebrant Cara Hodge of Brisbane City Celebrants

It was such a perfect Brisbane day for this happy bride and groom who wed in a sweet and heartfelt ceremony that shared their funny, quirky and romantic love story together.
Their ceremony took place at the gorgeous Palm Tree Court, Roma Street Parklands and so many guests came to see me afterwards to tell me how much they enjoyed the ceremony which really means more to me than I can even begin to explain!

The bride looked radiant wearing a beautiful Gatsby style dress with classic 1920s curls in her hair and a bird cage veil. The bridesmaids looked gorgeous in long mint dresses carrying yellow bouquets.

It was a pleasure having a Wedding Coordinator from The Main Event on hand, she admitted to shedding a tear or 2 during their sweet ceremony. Love her!
The happy couple continued the celebrations in the wonderful hands of the Fix Restaurant Weddings team, who I guess must be just a little impressed with me as a Celebrant from the last wedding I did there as they were kind enough to recommend me to this lovely couple.

Wishing the happy newlyweds every success and happiness for their future together and thank you for choosing me to be your Roma Street Parklands Wedding Celebrant.

An elegant indoor Brisbane Marriott Hotel wedding

An elegant indoor Brisbane Marriott Hotel Wedding

With Celebrant Jamie Eastgate of Brisbane City Celebrants

It is such an honour to be the recommended Celebrants of a venue as prestigious as the Brisbane Marriott Hotel, and as such we have had the pleasure of performing many weddings here.

I am excited to share some photos from this elegant indoor Brisbane Marriott Hotel wedding which demonstrates how well the venue works for smaller weddings too.

This wedding took place in the Queen Adelaide Room with a removable wall separating the ceremony and reception areas. The removable wall would also work perfectly in converting an engagement party in to a wedding ceremony for those planning on having a surprise wedding!
